What Backtrackers Are

We understand that in order to describe who we are, it’s important to first explain what we mean by “backtracking.”

Since the word can carry different meanings depending on the circumstance, we are going to use the example of hiking to help describe who we are, what we are not and what we mean by "backtracking".

Backtracking means to reverse one's steps; to go back to a previous point or stage in order to reconsider, re-evaluate, or change a decision, direction, or course of action.

In hiking situations, backtracking has been proven to be a prudent and life-saving action when someone is lost. Being willing to stop in your tracks, evaluate your situation and if need be, retrace your steps back to a place that you recognize and are sure about, you can then begin to look into what happened and correct your mistake if you've made one.

But pressing on in a confusing direction, hoping that things will start to make sense, may lead you deeper into trouble and into dangerous territory.

In Christianity, backtracking works much the same as in hiking. When you sense that something in your beliefs doesn’t add up, or the direction you’ve been taught to follow seems unclear, pressing forward and hoping it will all come together, could lead to deeper confusion for you and others who may follow you.

The process of backtracking allows you to pause, re-examine, and if need be, retrace your steps to return to a place of clarity and truth. And while this could lead to a change in direction if you discovered a mistake or you decide to continue following the path from which you just backtracked from, at least now when you move forward, you have a better understanding of what you believe, why you believe it and where it leads.

At Backtrackers, one of our central goals is to help those who are questioning their beliefs and what they’ve been taught, but who don’t want to abandon Christianity or give up on the possibility of God altogether. We do this by allowing everyone the freedom to ask questions, whether they are straightforward, hard or controversial and the freedom to express what they are thinking and feeling without fear of ridicule or backlash. We provide resources and rational perspectives that help address some of Christianity's most difficult questions.

How do we do this? We start with the question, “Is God real?”. To achieve this goal, we draw from science, math, history, archaeology, anthropology, logic, philosophy, and the stories passed down in the Bible. Through these we investigate God’s existence and His nature, who Jesus was, what we are, where we came from, where we are going, and the very nature of our reality.

And while we will be sharing compelling evidence pointing toward the possibility of such an incredible Being existing, we, like everyone else, still “don’t know” for certain. But we want to. And if such knowledge is unattainable in this life, we at least want to get as close as we can.
